Bluesky International, a Woolpert Company, has launched a new Great Britain-wide 50m Clutter Map, delivering consistent 2.5D surface intelligence designed to support telecommunications network planning, signal modelling, and rollout optimisation.
The 50m Clutter Map describes the type and height of surface features that influence radio signal propagation, providing a consistent nationwide baseline for network planning and analysis.
The dataset classifies the landscape into built, vegetation and water categories, enriched with height bands to better represent the vertical characteristics of the environment across Great Britain.
Designed specifically for radio-frequency (RF) modelling, the dataset provides a consistent, nationwide view of the physical environment, enabling effective coverage prediction, line-of-sight analysis and network planning at scale. Derived from contemporary geospatial datasets, it offers an up-to-date and consistent foundation for modern network planning requirements.
The Clutter Map has been developed using a combination of authoritative building datasets, Bluesky’s high-resolution elevation models and vegetation intelligence. These inputs are harmonised through a consistent modelling framework to create a seamless, nationwide surface classification optimised for RF analysis.
Future releases will continue to benefit from Bluesky’s expanding portfolio of national intelligence products, supporting ongoing improvements in accuracy and consistency.
Key benefits for telecom operators include:
- Improved RF modelling through consistent, nationwide surface classification
- Better coverage prediction using representative height and land cover characteristics
- More effective planning of 5G and high-frequency networks, where surface clutter significantly impacts performance
- Reduced reliance on early-stage site surveys through a robust baseline dataset
- Enhanced support for line-of-sight and backhaul planning at regional and national scales
Ian Dee, Associate Director – Innovation at Bluesky, commented: “Reliable clutter modelling is essential for modern network design. This nationwide dataset provides a consistent, ready-to-use foundation, enabling operators to make faster and more informed decisions during network planning and optimisation, particularly in the early stages of deployment.”
The GB 50m Clutter Map is available now and can be downloaded directly from the Bluesky Mapshop, with access to sample data and tile-based purchasing.
